The UCC Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences is a research-led, multidisciplinary course that provides state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the accelerated area of medical science. Students study across the spectrum of medical and health-related disciplines, opening up a wide range of career opportunities upon graduation in the medical, pharmaceutical, and healthcare sectors. The course provides in-depth scientific knowledge of health and medical sciences, cutting-edge research methods, and insight into how research affects human health and medicine. There are practical opportunities to undertake projects in world-class research laboratories.
The Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences offers an integrated learning experience in an interdisciplinary setting, to produce graduates who are passionate about human health and medicine and are equipped to undertake careers in the medical research or healthcare sectors. It has a strong focus on research and is taught by academics active in research in a wide range of disciplines spanning the biological and medical sciences. This course offers up-to-date and up-to-date knowledge in the field of biomedical, clinical, and public health sciences. It encourages students to nurture their critical thinking and analytical study skills, enabling them to research, develop and implement the innovative healthcare of the future.
Students take core modules in Years 1, 2, and 3, providing a strong foundation in the health and medical sciences. In Year 4, students undertake a substantial research project on a current research topic in the medical and health sciences. In addition, each student can choose from a wide range of specialized modules in the final year, allowing him to design the individual composition of his degree.
The BSc Medical and Health Sciences opens up many career opportunities in Ireland and beyond in the fields of medicine, biosciences and health sciences. Graduates have a solid foundation for pursuing master’s and doctoral studies in a wide range of medical science areas, doctoral research leading to careers in medical research, and for entering postgraduate studies to study Medicine, Physiotherapy, Audiology, Public Health, Health Occupational, Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language Therapy. Career prospects also include employment in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries, and in health promotion, education, and policy.
Teaching is delivered Monday through Friday, with a combination of scheduled lectures, tutorials, and lab / practical sessions each week.
Students are assessed using a variety of formats to meet different learning styles. Assessments include essays, written reports, class tests, online exercises, practical demonstrations, laboratory skills, oral presentations, and written tests. Written exams take place before Christmas and in May.
The Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences is an interdisciplinary degree taught by experienced academic staff at the College of Medicine and Health and the College of Science, Engineering, and Food Sciences. The supervision of the main teaching and research project will be in charge of the active research academic staff of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and the Faculty of Microbiology, who specialize in the various areas of medical and health sciences.
- Applicants must have completed a Baccalaureate degree with laboratory science subjects as follows: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Sciences.
- In the case of international candidates, the foreign equivalent is required. In addition, a degree officially translated into English will be required.
- IELTS 6.5, with no less than 6 in any component (or its internationally recognised equivalent).
